Investing in Barnet’s Future: Supporting Young People and Community Food Growing

At Peter Ridley Waste Systems, supplying waste containers is about more than just delivering products to local authorities; it’s about investing directly in the communities we work with. As part of our social value commitments under our contract with the London Borough of Barnet, we are proud to support local initiatives that create a lasting, positive social and environmental footprint.

We have contributed a £11,000 monetary donation to the Young Barnet Foundation in support of their Space2Grow initiative, alongside a donation of 30 Horto composters to the Barnet Community Food Growing Network.

Investing in the Next Generation: Space2Grow

Children and young people are at the heart of Barnet’s future. The Young Barnet Foundation works tirelessly to empower local voluntary youth organisations, and our £11,000 donation goes directly toward their vital Space2Grow small grants scheme.

Space2Grow funds community-led activities, spaces, and opportunities for local children and young people, ensuring grassroots projects get the critical financial backing they need. Through Space2Grow, our support helps deliver impactful programs across the borough, ranging from holiday activity clubs and sports initiatives to emotional well-being services.

Closing the Loop: Supporting the Barnet Community Food Growing Network

Promoting sustainable waste practices is central to how we operate. By donating 30 composters to community gardens and food-growing spaces supported by the Barnet Community Food Growing Network, we hope to make it easier for residents, volunteers, and local groups to turn organic waste into a valuable resource for growing projects across the borough.

Composting is one of the most effective local actions for reducing organic waste sent to disposal, cutting down carbon emissions, and building nutrient-rich soil. This donation will help local growing projects:

  • Divert Organic Waste: Keep food scraps and green waste out of traditional waste streams.
  • Nurture Soil & Local Produce: Regenerate soil to grow fresh, local produce within community gardens.
  • Educate & Engage: Provide hands-on educational tools for volunteers, school groups, and residents learning about sustainable living.

Social value isn’t just a requirement in a contract, it is our ongoing promise to build stronger, greener, and healthier neighbourhoods. By pairing direct financial backing for young people through Space2Grow with practical tools for environmental sustainability, we are proud to support Barnet’s social and ecological resilience.

We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the London Borough of Barnet, the Young Barnet Foundation, and the Barnet Community Food Growing Network, and we look forward to seeing the lasting impact these initiatives will have across the borough.
